“Smile, you are at NIT-J” is what greeted me while I returned to my alma mater. Not sure how much they meant it, but it surely brought a smile to me. I experienced transition in a moment when the security guard remembered who I was – Having spent over 2 years in the corporate world, I once again felt like a student.
Unlike the earlier days, a warm greeting and I was lodged in the guest house.
The morning was subtly different. A meeting with TPO followed by a nice breakfast. Having missed the purpose of this visit – I was representing my company at my college – Don’t we just love that?
During the day, I visited the canteen – a Shopkeeper here having recognised me asked if I was there for collecting my degree and when known the purpose of my visit – recruitments – a different kind of gratitude followed. This felt as a special welcome.
Entering the lab full of students – I could feel a complete stranger, a complete disconnect as the students made me feel not one amongst them. Having told them that I’m from the 2013 batch, a different air took over. It was like the stock market opened and everyone was upto something – their questions flew to me like covering every sphere that even I hadn’t thought of.
Having told them about the energy, culture, the way we work, the technology, the fun of working in a high energy environment and what it would take to draw respect in the tech world. We discussed on aspects of technology that would impact our future and a comparison of my work in the 2 companies that I have been at was sought – earlier Samsung and now Drishti.
It was good to see that students do try to take a very informative call when it comes to taking up their first job. They would want their first job to be an enabler in their career and something that brings a thrust of responsibilities, something where the learning curve is a constant uphill. I somehow switched to a completely experience sharing mode and making whatsoever information and experience I had to help them make an informed decision. At one moment I was asked as to why these companies have a bond? – Come to think of it – It would take any student 2 years to become an expert in any field and in that period both the company and the individual should be able to put an effort towards each other free of all conditions. One thing that i needed to ascertain upon is that in this initial phase of our career, work with a mindset to achieve and deliver. Period.
Being a student, any 2 to 3 hour test was a usual, but invigilating is not an easy task. I was remembering the time when we thought that what does an invigilator do afterall. Believe me, it’s a tiring task.
Once the test was over, I found myself surrounded was inquiring minds firing questions at me. I felt like a black hole, only absorbing questions and then I started to ensure that all got the answer they could understand. I used to be one among them some time back. It was like I could see myself in all of them.
Having finished with the task at my hand, I went to the my project mentor who had become the HOD by now and when he remembered me by my first name, and that I was placed in Samsung, it felt Special. It felt WOW. When he asked me how can we take the courses to next step and importance of subjects, it felt like I have actually moved up the ladder. The feeling of being a winner had struck. I did not feel like a student.
It felt like all these years I definitely had put together something to contribute.
I went with a mere thought to relive some past moments and conduct a recruitment process but returning with a thoughtful head.
1 thing I understood is that you see your college, you remember the countless memories you had raked up there but then if you see it with a thought of adding to it and your mind explodes with a thousand ideas!
